Similac Baby Formula Lawsuit

Similac baby formula lawsuits are being filed by parents of premature or underweight babies who were fed Similac formula and developed Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). While premature babies need extra care and often extra nutrition after birth, studies have shown that feeding them bovine-based (cow’s milk) formula can cause them to develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Necrotizing entrocolitis (NEC) is a very serious bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal system of infants that can cause rapid decay and death of tissue in the baby’s inner intestinal walls. NEC can develop in the small or large intestine and the necrotizing infection originates in the inner lining of the intestinal walls and eventually impacts the entire thickness of the intestine. Abbot Laboratories and Mead Johnson & Company, the makers of the Similac and Enfamil baby formulas, have never put a warning on their products to alert parents about this threat to their babies’ health. If your premature infant was fed Enfamil or Similac baby formula and they developed necrotizing enterocolitis, and you are considering a baby formula lawsuit, call us at 718-823-3122 or submit your case online.

Premature Babies and Baby Formula

The scientific evidence linking NEC to Similac dates back over 30 years. Recent research has conclusively confirmed that premature babies who are given Similac (or other cow-milk-based formulas) have a significantly higher risk of NEC compared to those who are fed with breast milk. Premature babies who are fed with a cow-milk formula such as Similac, are ten times more at risk for developing NEC than those fed with breast milk. (NEC). Typically, NEC develops in two- to six-week-old babies who were born early.

One study of more than 900 premature infants found that:

  • Preterm infants fed baby formula were 6 to 10 times more likely to develop NEC than those fed only breast milk.
  • Preterm infants fed baby formula were 3 times more likely to develop NEC than those fed both breast milk and baby formula.

Unsuspecting parents already facing the stress of caring for a premature baby were never warned that their choice of baby formula could cause their baby to develop a serious disease.

Abbott Laboratories and Mead Johnson & Company have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their products and to give appropriate warnings when the products create unusual risks.
